Sean Burke Named Rare Opening Day Starter
Chicago White Sox pitcher Sean Burke has been named the Opening Day starter, earning the nod with Guaranteed Rate. Burke is the seventh pitcher in the past 100 years to start an Opening Day game with fewer than 20 career innings pitched.
Other pitchers with fewer than 20 career innings on Opening Day include:
• Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who had 17.2 innings in 1981.
• Tom Pohlotky of the St. Louis Cardinals, with 14.2 innings in 1951.
• Preacher Roe of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who started with 2.2 innings in 1944.
• Hal Gregg of the Brooklyn Dodgers, with 18.2 innings in 1944.
• Eddie Smith of the Philadelphia Phillies, who had 19.0 innings in 1937.
• Carroll Yerkes of the Philadelphia Phillies, with 9.2 innings in 1929.
